Why Indic Thought for Our Ecological Moment?

As the planet confronts climate breakdown, biodiversity collapse, and the ethical failures of extractive economies, the world is searching for alternative frameworks — ones that integrate human activity with natural systems rather than placing them in opposition. Indic civilization, developed over thousands of years through sustained observation and experience, offers precisely such frameworks. Not as romantic nostalgia, but as rigorous knowledge systems that modern ecology, systems thinking, and environmental ethics are only beginning to rediscover.

Unlike Western philosophical traditions that positioned humanity as master of nature, Indic thought — rooted in the Vedas, Upanishads, and Buddhist and Jain frameworks — consistently understood the human being as embedded within, not superior to, the web of living systems. This was not mere metaphor. It was encoded in land use practices, dietary ethics, water governance, seasonal calendars, and ecological rituals that sustained one of the world's most densely populated civilizations for millennia without systemic ecological collapse.

This lecture series examines those frameworks systematically — their philosophical foundations, their historical expression, and their potential application to contemporary ecological and ethical challenges.

Cosmic & Ethical Order
Not "religion" as colonial translators insisted, but the underlying principle of right order — in cosmos, society, ecology, and individual conduct. Dharma implies that human activity carries obligations to the whole living system, not merely to human interests. It is behaviour-based rather than faith-based.

Non-Harm
Non-violence extended beyond human beings to all living creatures — a systematic ethical framework that shaped diet, agriculture, medicine, and governance across millennia. Modern animal ethics and plant sentience research are rediscovering this territory from scratch.

Karma establishes that actions have consequences extending across time. Combined with Indic cosmological timescales — billions of years, not thousands — this creates a framework for intergenerational responsibility that is structurally absent from most Western ethical and political thought.

Nature as Animate Intelligence
Nature is not inert resource but living intelligence. Rivers, forests, mountains, and animals are participants in a shared cosmic order. This ontological position has direct implications for law, governance, and human obligation — positions modern environmental law is only now beginning to explore.

Deep Roots of an Ecological Civilization

The ecological wisdom of Indic civilization was not abstract philosophy but lived practice, embedded in governance, agriculture, urban planning, and daily life across thousands of years of continuous civilization — sustained by the unique conditions of the subcontinent.

c. 7000 BCE onwards — Vedic Period
Environmental Ethics in the Vedas
The Atharva Veda contains the Bhumi Sukta — explicit hymns to the Earth as living mother, articulating human obligations to soil, water, plants, and animals. The Nasadiya Sukta (Rigveda 10.129) poses cosmological questions with striking epistemic humility, ending with the acknowledgment that even the gods may not know the answer. This is not mythology — it is an ethical-ecological framework embedded in civilization's foundational texts.
c. 3000–1900 BCE — Indus Valley
Urban Ecological Intelligence
Harappan cities demonstrate sophisticated drainage systems, water management, standardized weights and measurements, and urban planning — evidence of a civilization that integrated human habitation with ecological systems at scale, sustaining dense populations over centuries without evident ecological collapse. The level of planning implies a long prior tradition of systematic knowledge.
c. 500 BCE — Maurya Empire
Ashoka's Environmental Edicts
Emperor Ashoka established what may be the world's first formal environmental legislation — protecting forests, medicinal plants, and animals across his empire, and establishing veterinary hospitals for wildlife. Kautilya's Arthashastra codified forest governance and ecological law. These were expressions of a civilization-wide ethical framework derived from Dharmic and Buddhist thought.
Medieval Period — Rajasthan
Bishnoi Community & Sacred Ecology
The Bishnoi community developed 29 principles of ecological stewardship — protecting trees, animals, and water sources — centuries before the modern environmental movement. Their resistance to tree-felling in 1730, in which 363 community members gave their lives to protect trees, directly inspired the Chipko movement of the 20th century. This was Dharma as environmental action.

Epistemic Humility at the Origin of Civilization

The Nasadiya Sukta (Rigveda 10.129), composed thousands of years before modern cosmology, poses questions about the origin of the universe and famously concludes with radical uncertainty — suggesting that perhaps even the gods do not know what preceded creation.

This epistemic humility — embedding acknowledged uncertainty into the foundational cosmological text — is structurally different from revealed-truth traditions that assert certainty about origins. It shaped a tradition of open inquiry that allowed Hinduism to contain materialists, atheists, and radical questioners within itself without expulsion. You can question everything. That is itself a kind of scientific spirit.

Knowledge Transmitted, Not Conquered

Indian maritime traders navigated deep ocean routes for thousands of years — to Arabia, East Africa, and Southeast Asia — long before European seafaring. Roman records document enormous trade deficits with India. Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions have been found in Egypt. The Indianization of Southeast Asia — spreading Hindu and Buddhist culture across Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam — happened through trade and cultural exchange, not conquest. The contrast with how that same knowledge, transmitted to Europe, was subsequently used, is historically significant.
